Commercial Service Tech
Position Summary
The Commercial Service Technician diagnoses, repairs, and maintains commercial HVAC and related mechanical systems. This role troubleshoots equipment, performs preventive and corrective maintenance, follows safety and code requirements, and delivers professional field service.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair commercial HVAC equipment including RTUs, split systems, furnaces, heat pumps, exhaust fans, make-up air units, VAVs, boilers, pumps, and related accessories
- Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, cleanings, filter changes, belt replacements, and seasonal service tasks
- Troubleshoot electrical, refrigeration, airflow, controls, and mechanical issues using proper diagnostic procedures and testing tools
- Identify failed or worn components and complete repairs including motors, contactors, capacitors, relays, belts, filters, sensors, thermostats, and other common service items
- Check and verify refrigerant charge, airflow, gas pressure, temperature splits, amperage, voltage, and control sequences
- Read wiring diagrams, service manuals, submittals, and equipment literature to support troubleshooting and repairs
- Communicate findings, recommended repairs, and equipment condition clearly to service manager, dispatcher, and customer
- Document service calls accurately including labor, materials, diagnostics, photos, notes, and repair recommendations
- Maintain a clean, safe work area and properly care for company vehicle, tools, and test instruments
- Follow company safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements, and all applicable codes and site rules
- Assist with start-ups, warranty service, emergency calls, and after-hours service as needed
- Report recurring equipment issues, safety concerns, and additional work opportunities to supervisor
Required Qualifications
- HVAC service experience
- EPA 608 certification
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical, refrigeration, and mechanical HVAC systems
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, service literature, and equipment manuals
- Working knowledge of safety practices, including PPE, ladders, lifts, and lockout/tagout
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs, climb ladders, and work on rooftops or in mechanical spaces
Preferred Qualifications
- Commercial HVAC service experience
- EPA 608 certification
- Journeyman license, where applicable
- OSHA 10 or equivalent safety training
- Experience with RTUs, boilers, hydronics, VAV systems, economizers, and commercial controls
- Experience with BAS/controls troubleshooting
- Experience performing customer-facing service in occupied commercial facilities
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather and jobsite conditions
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting
- Regular use of ladders, rooftops, lifts, hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic instruments
- May work in mechanical rooms, above ceilings, rooftops, and other confined or elevated spaces
