HERO Clinical Therapist
Stephen Center has served homeless and low-income individuals in Omaha since 1984 with the mission to partner with the community, families and individuals to overcome homelessness, addiction and poverty. The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing offerings provide safe and secure housing while individuals and families complete an assessment of permanent housing options. All Stephen Center residents have access to dual diagnosis support services via the HERO addiction/recovery program. 100% of Stephen Center shelter supportive housing participants are living in poverty. Housing transition support identifies poverty barriers that may impact one’s ability to achieve or maintain permanent housing through case management, life skills, and behavioral health services. Stephen Center serves approximately 250 people daily in all programs.
Purpose:
The Clinical
Therapist serves a critical role within the HERO Program, providing
comprehensive inpatient and outpatient behavioral health treatment services to
individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. This
position is responsible for conducting clinical assessments, developing and
implementing individualized treatment plans, facilitating individual and group
psychotherapy, and delivering both clinical and psychoeducational programming
on a daily basis. The therapist supports continuity of care across all levels
of programming (STR, IOP, and OP) while maintaining accurate and timely
clinical documentation in accordance with regulatory standards.
The Clinical Therapist is expected to function within a structured,
team-based environment, actively engaging in interdisciplinary collaboration
and balancing clinical judgment with program expectations. Services must align
with evidence-based practices, CARF standards, and all applicable federal,
state, and grant requirements. This role is a key contributor to program
culture, client engagement, and overall treatment outcomes, with clear
expectations for consistency, accountability, and professionalism in
maintaining a safe, therapeutic, and recovery-oriented environment. Additional
duties may be assigned to support program operations and client care.
Key Accountabilities:
Service Delivery & Clinical Responsibilities
- Provide
comprehensive, evidence-based behavioral health services to individuals
with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.
- Conduct
timely and accurate mental health and substance use assessments in
accordance with program and regulatory standards.
- Develop,
implement, and regularly update individualized treatment plans with
measurable short- and long-term goals in collaboration with the
interdisciplinary team.
- Facilitate
individual, group, and family counseling sessions, including daily
clinical and psycho educational groups.
- Conduct
substance abuse assessments, drug and alcohol evaluations, and chemical
dependency evaluations in accordance with clinical, state, and program
requirements, within the scope permitted by licensure.
- Maintain
a mixed caseload while ensuring continuity of care across all program
levels (STR, IOP, OP, Aftercare).
- Continuously
assess client progress and adjust treatment interventions based on
clinical need and team collaboration.
- Provide
onsite crisis intervention and participate in an on-call rotation for
after-hours client emergencies.
- Integrate
culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches into all aspects of
service delivery.
- Build
and maintain professional relationships with referral sources and
community partners to support coordinated care and program growth.
- Promote
agency services through appropriate outreach, workshops, and community
engagement opportunities.
- Adhere to all agency policies,
procedures, and clinical protocols while operating within scope of
practice and ethical guidelines.
Documentation, Compliance & Accountability
- Maintain
timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation, including
assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
- Ensure
all documentation meets agency, state, federal, payer, and CARF
accreditation standards.
- Accurately
document client progress, participation, and outcomes in a clear,
objective, and professional manner.
- Collaborate
with finance and administrative teams to ensure services are authorized,
billable, properly coded, and submitted in a timely manner.
- Complete
provider enrollment, reporting requirements, and required documentation to
support reimbursement and compliance.
- Maintain
required records for courts, external systems, and regulatory entities as
applicable.

Document and participate in clinical supervision in alignment with
licensure requirements, when applicable.
Professional Standards & Program Expectations
- Participate
consistently in clinical supervision, interdisciplinary team meetings, and
all required staff meetings.
- Actively
participate in daily client rounds and safety checks, collaborating with
interdisciplinary team members to monitor client status, address risks,
and support a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment.
- Collaborate
closely with Case Managers and the interdisciplinary team to develop and
implement timely, coordinated discharge plans that support continuity of
care and successful client transitions.
- Maintain
current knowledge of evidence-based practices, co-occurring treatment
standards, and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Engage
in ongoing professional development, including trainings, workshops, and
continuing education to support licensure and clinical growth.
- Uphold
strict confidentiality standards and ensure secure handling of all client
and agency information.
- Demonstrate
professionalism, accountability, and consistency in all aspects of the
role, including communication, decision-making, and follow-through.
- Maintain
positive, respectful, and collaborative relationships with clients, staff,
and community partners.
- Seek
guidance appropriately in complex clinical situations and demonstrate
sound judgment in prioritizing responsibilities.
- Contribute
to a safe, structured, and recovery-oriented environment that supports
positive client outcomes and program culture.
- Maintain
regular, reliable attendance and fulfill all assigned duties in a timely
and responsible manner.
- Perform
additional duties as assigned to support program operations and client
care.
Position
Requirements:
- Hold licensure
in the State of Nebraska as a PLADC, LADC, PLMHP, LIMHP, or Licensed
Social Worker; provisional licensure at minimum is required.
- Actively
pursue and maintain appropriate licensure, supervision, and continuing
education requirements in alignment with state regulations and scope of
practice.
- Demonstrate
the ability to assess, diagnose, and develop treatment recommendations for
individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders,
within the scope of licensure.
- Strong
written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to complete
clear, timely, and compliant clinical documentation.
- Ability
to work both independently and collaboratively, exercising sound clinical
judgment, discretion, and decision-making in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrate
cultural competence and the ability to effectively engage and support
individuals from diverse backgrounds, while applying trauma-informed care
principles in service delivery.
- Consistently
perform duties in alignment with the mission, vision, organizational
pillars, and core values of the Stephen Center, demonstrating
professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct at all times.
- Serve as
a positive role model for clients and staff by consistently demonstrating
honesty, accountability, and appropriate professional boundaries.
