Shelter Coordinator

Purpose: The Emergency Shelter Coordinator is responsible for the oversite and management of the Stephen Center Pettigrew Emergency Shelter.  The coordinator oversees staff, volunteers, interns, and work-study participants to ensure the provision of safe and effective services including providing training and on-going supervision. The shelter coordinator will also be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Pettigrew Emergency Shelter.

 

Key Accountabilities:

The Pettigrew Emergency Shelter Coordinator plays a critical leadership role in the daily operation, planning, and oversight of the emergency shelter. This position ensures a safe, sober, and supportive environment for shelter guests, while supervising and developing the case management and guest services team to deliver high-quality, client-centered care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with Shelter Manager to maintain 24/7 operational coverage to ensure adequate staffing at all times.
  • Maintain a consistent and visible presence within the shelter, ensuring daily operations run smoothly and align with program standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety, security, and sobriety protocols, fostering an environment that supports recovery and wellness.
  • Provide daily leadership, supervision, and support to case management and guest services personnel, under the direction of the Shelter Manager.
  • Monitor individual caseloads to ensure timely service delivery, appropriate resource referrals, and progress toward guest-centered goals.
  • Participate in developing and implementing training programs for new and existing case managers to promote consistency, effectiveness, and professional development.
  • Maintain sufficient staffing levels and coordinate 24/7 shelter coverage.
  • Ensure the accurate implementation of policies, procedures, and program objectives, while promoting best practices in trauma-informed and strengths-based care.
  • Oversee the use of the shelter’s database system; generate reports and assist with performance and outcome data analysis to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Lead the development and oversight of individualized service plans that connect guests to housing, employment, healthcare, and other community resources.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of community resources, services, and referral pathways to provide comprehensive support to guests.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, respect, and professionalism within the shelter, modeling behaviors aligned with recovery and wellness.
  • Abide by all agency policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the mission and vision of the shelter.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field preferred; Associate’s degree with equivalent experience considered.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience in a human services, housing, or behavioral health setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in case management and staff leadership.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed to support 24/7 shelter operations and respond to emergent needs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and client data management systems.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality in all matters.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, clients, and community partners.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties, including occasional lifting (up to 25 lbs) and navigating a multi-level facility.
  • Professional conduct that supports recovery from mental illness, substance use, or co-occurring disorders, including one year of sobriety if in personal recovery.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not exposed to weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
