About the Role

As a Cook, you hold a critical position in our childcare facility, ensuring that every meal and snack provided meets the nutritional needs of the children in our care. Your attention to detail and adherence to dietary guidelines play a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of our young ones.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make sure meals and snacks serve comply with the Meal Patterns for children in childcare standards.

  • Make sure the types of food, number and size of servings are appropriate for the ages and developmental levels of the children in your care.

  • When children bring their own food for meals or snacks to the center, if the food does not meet the nutritional requirements outlined in the Meal Patterns for children in childcare, provide additional food necessary to meet those requirements.

  • Be sure foods and beverages with little or no nutritional value served as a snack, such as sweets, fruit drinks, soft drinks, etc., are only available for special occasions.

  • Make sure no child goes more than four hours without a meal or snack being provided.

  • Provide a variety of different foods/meals.

  • Have all meals and snacks planned on a written menu.

  • Provide a list of all supplies needed at least three days in advance.

  • Be sure any substitution must be of comparable food value and must be clearly identified on the menu.

  • Assist as needed with miscellaneous duties.

  • Maintain cleanliness of the facility and staff break room.

  • Restock staff break room. 


Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum age of 18 years.

  • General knowledge of operating kitchen appliances safely.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Eligibility to work with children in the state of North Carolina based on a criminal background check.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification or training in nutrition or dietary guidelines for children.

  • Experience in menu planning for childcare settings.

  • Knowledge of CACFP Meal Patterns for children in childcare standards.

  • Familiarity with age-appropriate food serving sizes and nutritional needs.

  • Understanding of dietary requirements and restrictions for children with allergies or special dietary needs.

  • Experience in promoting healthy eating habits among children.

  • Ability to create diverse and appealing menus that meet nutritional guidelines.

  • Strong organizational skills for menu planning and supply management.

  • Ability to adapt menus to accommodate special occasions or dietary restrictions.

  • Knowledge of safe food handling and sanitation practices.
